Fertility Assessment
Semen Analysis
The first and most informative test on the male side — quick, non-invasive, and capable of changing the whole treatment plan on its own.
The first and most informative test in a male assessment — and one of the few that can change the whole treatment plan on its own.
What does a semen analysis measure?
The volume of the sample, the concentration of sperm within it, how many are moving and how well, and the proportion with a normal shape. It also checks for signs of infection.
Results vary naturally between samples, so an abnormal first report is repeated.
Semen Analysis — Step by Step
What happens at each stage, in order.
- 1
Two to five days abstinence
Shorter or longer both distort the result.
- 2
Producing the sample
At the centre, or brought in within the time we specify.
- 3
Laboratory analysis
Assessed within the hour, since motility falls with time.
- 4
Results and discussion
Explained in context rather than handed over as numbers.
- 5
Repeat if abnormal
Usually after a few weeks, before any conclusion is drawn.
About Semen Analysis
A semen analysis measures the volume of the sample, the concentration of sperm within it, how many are moving and how well, and the proportion with a normal shape. It also looks for signs of infection. It is the single most informative test on the male side, and it is quick, non-invasive and inexpensive relative to what it rules in or out.
Preparing for the test
- Two to five days of abstinence — shorter or longer both distort the result
- Avoid alcohol in the days beforehand
- Tell us about any recent fever, a high temperature suppresses production for weeks
- Mention any medication you are taking
- Samples are produced at the centre, or brought in within the time we specify
Results vary naturally from sample to sample, so an abnormal first report is normally repeated before any conclusion is drawn from it. One poor result on its own rarely changes a plan.
Benefits & Potential Considerations
An honest picture of both sides, so the decision is an informed one.
Benefits
- The single most informative test in a male assessment
- Non-invasive and quick
- Often determines whether IUI, IVF or ICSI is the appropriate route
- Repeatable, so treatment can be tracked against a baseline
Potential considerations
- Wide natural variation means one sample is rarely conclusive
- Recent fever, illness or a short abstinence period can distort the result
- Producing a sample to order is stressful for some men
- A normal result does not measure everything, such as sperm DNA integrity

Frequently asked questions about Semen Analysis
If your question is not here, call the centre — we would rather answer it before you book.
- Too short and the count is artificially low; too long and motility falls. Two to five days is the window where the sample reflects your usual production rather than the timing of the test.
