Egg donation is a long-established fertility treatment. It is used where the ovaries have lost the ability to produce eggs of suitable quality, or in some cases any eggs at all — for example in premature ovarian failure. In these circumstances the uterus itself is usually entirely capable of carrying a pregnancy. Donor-egg pregnancies are monitored more closely than most, because they carry a recognised increase in blood-pressure disorders of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia; your specialist will explain what that means for your own antenatal care.

Pregnancy rates with donated eggs are generally higher than with a woman’s own eggs at the same age, largely because donors are younger and egg quality tracks the age of the egg rather than the age of the recipient. That is a general pattern rather than a promise — what applies to you depends on your own assessment, and your specialist will discuss it before you decide.

Our team has been very active in raising awareness of the need for egg donors in recent years, and we are conscious of the enormous gift that donors are making to an infertile couple. Egg donation at our clinic is usually anonymous, but we will accept known donors following careful consideration on a case-by-case basis, providing they fall within the published criteria.
