What is ICSI?
ICSI — Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection — is a refined form of IVF. Eggs and sperm are collected as in a standard cycle, but instead of leaving fertilization to happen in the dish, one carefully selected sperm is injected directly into each mature egg under a micromanipulator. IMSI adds much higher magnification to the selection step.
Even when very few sperm are available, ICSI can achieve fertilization by selecting the best of them.

What happens at each stage, in order.

Cycle and sperm preparation
Stimulation proceeds as for IVF while the sperm sample is prepared, or sperm is retrieved surgically where none is present in the ejaculate.

Selection
Individual sperm are assessed for shape and movement. IMSI uses much higher magnification to refine that choice.

Micro-injection
A single sperm is injected into the cytoplasm of each mature egg using a micromanipulator.

Fertilization check
Eggs are examined the following day to confirm fertilization has occurred.

Culture and transfer
Embryos are cultured and graded, then one is transferred; surplus embryos can be frozen.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a highly advanced form of IVF treatment in which a single healthy sperm is injected directly into an egg to achieve fertilization. It is especially useful in cases of male infertility, where sperm count, quality or motility is low.
