What is ovulation induction?
You cannot conceive in a cycle where no egg is released. Where ovulation is irregular or absent, medication is used to mature and release one egg — deliberately one, because more raises the chance of a twin or triplet pregnancy, which carries materially higher risks for mother and babies.
The aim is one mature follicle, not several. Monitoring is what keeps it that way.

What happens at each stage, in order.

Early in the cycle, to confirm the ovaries are quiet before starting.

About Ovulation Induction
You cannot conceive in a cycle where no egg is released, so where ovulation is irregular or absent, restoring it is often the whole treatment. The goal of ovulation induction is deliberately modest — to mature and release one egg, not several. More than one raises the chance of a twin or triplet pregnancy, which carries materially higher risks for mother and babies.
How a cycle runs
- Tablets, usually taken on cycle days 3–7 or 5–9
- Ultrasound scans to watch how the follicles respond
- Injectable medication where tablets alone do not work
- A trigger injection timed to the hour, once a follicle is mature
- Timed intercourse or IUI, then a pregnancy test about two weeks later
Monitoring is what makes this safe rather than routine. Scans show whether too many follicles are developing, and a cycle is sometimes cancelled for exactly that reason — an inconvenience that avoids a high-order multiple pregnancy.
