Ovulation & Insemination

Ovulation Induction

Medication to bring on the release of a single mature egg, for women who are not ovulating regularly. Often the whole treatment where ovulation is the problem.

Medication to bring on the release of a single mature egg, for women who are not ovulating regularly.

What is ovulation induction?

You cannot conceive in a cycle where no egg is released. Where ovulation is irregular or absent, medication is used to mature and release one egg — deliberately one, because more raises the chance of a twin or triplet pregnancy, which carries materially higher risks for mother and babies.

The aim is one mature follicle, not several. Monitoring is what keeps it that way.

Ovulation Induction — Step by Step

What happens at each stage, in order.

  1. 1

    Baseline scan

Early in the cycle, to confirm the ovaries are quiet before starting.

  2. 2

    Medication

Tablets on cycle days 3–7 or 5–9, or injections where tablets do not work.

  3. 3

    Scan monitoring

Following how many follicles develop and how quickly.

  4. 4

    Trigger injection

Timed to the hour once a follicle is mature, so ovulation is predictable.

  5. 5

    Timed intercourse or IUI

    Scheduled around the trigger.

  6. 6

    Pregnancy test

A blood test about two weeks later.

About Ovulation Induction

You cannot conceive in a cycle where no egg is released, so where ovulation is irregular or absent, restoring it is often the whole treatment. The goal of ovulation induction is deliberately modest — to mature and release one egg, not several. More than one raises the chance of a twin or triplet pregnancy, which carries materially higher risks for mother and babies.

How a cycle runs

  • Tablets, usually taken on cycle days 3–7 or 5–9
  • Ultrasound scans to watch how the follicles respond
  • Injectable medication where tablets alone do not work
  • A trigger injection timed to the hour, once a follicle is mature
  • Timed intercourse or IUI, then a pregnancy test about two weeks later

Monitoring is what makes this safe rather than routine. Scans show whether too many follicles are developing, and a cycle is sometimes cancelled for exactly that reason — an inconvenience that avoids a high-order multiple pregnancy.

Is Ovulation Induction right for you?

The factors this treatment is usually recommended for.

  • Ovulation problems

    • Irregular or absent periods
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome
    • Confirmed anovulation on testing
  • Alongside other treatment

    • Combined with timed intercourse
    • As part of an IUI cycle
    • Unexplained infertility, as a first step

Benefits & Potential Considerations

An honest picture of both sides, so the decision is an informed one.

Benefits

  • Treats the problem directly where ovulation is the barrier
  • Far less demanding and less expensive than IVF
  • Tablets are effective for many women without needing injections
  • Can be repeated over several cycles

Potential considerations

  • Multiple pregnancy if more than one follicle matures — the reason for close monitoring
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation, uncommon at these doses but possible
  • Cycles are sometimes cancelled when too many follicles develop
  • It will not help where the barrier is tubal or severe male factor

Frequently asked questions about Ovulation Induction

If your question is not here, call the centre — we would rather answer it before you book.

  • Because too many follicles have developed. Going ahead would carry a real risk of a triplet or higher pregnancy, which is dangerous for both mother and babies. A cancelled cycle is frustrating, but it is the monitoring doing its job.
