What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization is a process in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus to achieve pregnancy. Every stage is monitored — the response to stimulation, the maturity of the eggs, the development of the embryo — so the plan can be adjusted as the cycle progresses.

A cycle usually runs four to six weeks from the start of stimulation to the pregnancy test.

What happens at each stage, in order.

    Cycle preparation

    The cycle is planned around your history and hormone profile, and medication is started on a set day.

  2. 2

    Ovarian stimulation

    Injections over roughly 8–12 days encourage several follicles to mature, monitored by ultrasound and blood tests.

  3. 3

    Trigger and retrieval

    A trigger injection completes egg maturation; eggs are collected around 34–36 hours later under sedation.

  4. 4

    Fertilization and culture

    Eggs are fertilised in the laboratory and the resulting embryos are cultured and assessed over the following days.

  5. 5

    Embryo transfer

    One embryo is usually transferred into the uterus in a quick outpatient procedure. Surplus embryos can be frozen.

    Pregnancy test

    A blood test roughly two weeks after transfer confirms whether the cycle has worked.

Ovulation induction

For women who are not ovulating regularly, the goal of treatment is to mature and release a single egg — ovulation induction. Clomiphene alone often works well to prompt the ovaries to mature an egg; a typical protocol involves taking it on cycle days 3–7 or 5–9, with ultrasound scans and blood tests used to monitor the response.
