What is a frozen embryo transfer?
An FET uses an embryo already stored from an earlier cycle. Because the stimulation, the retrieval and the laboratory work have all been done, it is a considerably shorter, less demanding and less expensive treatment than a fresh cycle.
Where there is a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, freezing everything and transferring later is clearly the safer route.

Progesterone continues until the pregnancy test and beyond if positive.

A blood test about two weeks after the transfer.
About Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
A frozen embryo transfer uses an embryo already stored from an earlier cycle. Because the stimulation, the retrieval and the laboratory work have all been done, an FET is a considerably shorter and less demanding treatment than a fresh cycle — and a considerably less expensive one.
How the cycle runs
- The lining of the uterus is prepared, either in your natural cycle or with medication
- Scans confirm the lining has reached a suitable thickness
- The embryo is thawed on the day of transfer
- Transfer through a fine catheter under ultrasound guidance, without anaesthesia in most cases
- A blood pregnancy test about two weeks later
Whether a frozen transfer is preferable to a fresh one depends on how your stimulation cycle actually went, so it is often decided late rather than promised in advance. Where there is a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, freezing everything and transferring later is clearly the safer route.
