What is ovarian reserve testing?

About Ovarian Reserve Testing
Ovarian reserve testing estimates the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It is read as a pair: anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) from a blood sample, and an antral follicle count taken on transvaginal ultrasound. Together they predict how the ovaries are likely to respond to stimulation, which is what determines the drug dose in a treatment cycle.
What the result does and does not tell you
- It estimates egg quantity, not egg quality — quality tracks age
- It predicts response to stimulation, which is its main practical use
- It is a poor predictor of natural conception on its own
- A low result does not mean you cannot conceive
- It is always read alongside your age and history, never in isolation
AMH can be tested at any point in the cycle. The antral follicle count is taken in the first few days, which is why the two are often booked together at the start of a cycle.
