Assessing only one partner is the most common way a couple ends up repeating months of investigation. A history, an examination and a semen analysis identify most male-factor problems between them, and none of it is demanding.
An abnormal result narrows the route rather than closing it.

What happens at each stage, in order.

History and examination
Previous illness, surgery, infection, medication and occupational exposure, with a physical examination.

Volume, concentration, motility and morphology, plus signs of infection.

Repeat sample if needed
Results vary naturally, so an abnormal first report is normally repeated.

Hormone tests
Where the count is very low or absent, to distinguish the likely cause.

About Male Fertility Assessment
Assessing only one partner is the most common way a couple ends up repeating months of investigation. A male assessment starts with a history, an examination and a semen analysis — between them these identify most male-factor problems, and they are far less demanding than the female workup.
What the assessment covers
- Semen analysis — volume, concentration, motility and morphology
- A repeat sample where the first is abnormal, since results vary naturally
- Physical examination, including checking for a varicocele
- Hormone tests where the count is very low or absent
- Scrotal ultrasound and genetic testing in selected cases
An abnormal result is not a conclusion. It narrows the route rather than closing it, and in many cases the underlying cause — an infection, a hormonal deficiency, a varicocele — can be treated directly.

- A normal analysis does not entirely exclude a male factor

- Two to five days of abstinence — shorter or longer both distort the result. Avoid alcohol in the days before, and tell us about any recent fever, because a high temperature suppresses sperm production for weeks afterwards.
