What is a fertility evaluation?
Infertility is medically defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. Nearly 85% of couples conceive within the first year and around 93% within two years. Where that has not happened, a fertility evaluation looks at ovulation, the fallopian tubes, the uterus and the semen analysis to identify what is standing in the way.
Both partners are assessed. Male factors account for a substantial share of cases, so evaluating only one partner leaves half the picture missing.

What happens at each stage, in order.

Menstrual history, previous pregnancies, surgery, medication and lifestyle factors for both partners.

Ovulation tracking, AMH and hormone profile, and a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus.

Semen analysis measuring count, motility and morphology, repeated if the first result is abnormal.

Where indicated, an HSG or laparoscopy to check whether the fallopian tubes are open.
